Joseph Lux Guest Panelist on Tribal Courts Forum

Joseph Lux will be a guest panelist at the forum titled "Tribal Courts: Accomplishments, Issues and Challenges" on Friday, April 17, 2009. The Forum will take place at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The forum is free in conjunction with the 26th annual "Indian Awareness Week and Lakota Omniciye Wacipi (pow-wow)".

The forum will discuss what Tribal Court is and how it affects the people on and off the Reservation. The Moderator will be John Glover, who is the Director of the Center for American Indian Studies at Black Hills State University and Associate Dean for American Indian Law Programs at The University of South Dakota School of Law. The other Panelists are: Frank Pommersheim, Professor of Law at the University of South Dakota and Chief Justice at the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Court of Appeals and the Rosebud Sioux Supreme Court; B.J. Jones, Director of Tribal Judicial Insitute at the University of North Dakota and Chief Justice of the Turtle Mountain Tribal Court of Appeals; Sherman Marshall, Rosebud Sioux Tribal Court Judge; and Patrick Lee, Oglala Sioux Tribal Court Judge.

Registration begins at 8:00 am, followed by a welcome by Mount Rushmore Institute President Jim Nelson and Mount Rushmore Superintendent Gerard Baker and an opening prayer. Panel Presentations begin at 9:00 am, with a panel discussion and dialogue at 10:45 am. After a noon lunch break, the forum resumes at 1:00 pm with questions. At 3:00 pm, the forum comes to a close.
